A little trip away from the city that’s only about a 10-15 min ferry ride away from Manhattan; Governors Island opened to the public for the summer on May 27th and will close on September 25th.
You can visit every Friday-Sunday and on holiday Mondays from 10am to 5pm on Fridays, and from 10am to 7pm Saturday, Sunday, and holiday Mondays. Free ferries leave from Manhattan adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal and from Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Check their website for scheduled departures.
It was once home to the Army and then to the Coast Guard; Governors Island now belongs to NYC and is considered a part of Manhattan.
