Out and About

Golden Gloves Boxing Event at the Barclay Center

My first boxing match ever, and loads of fun. I was expecting it to be very intense and difficult to watch, but it was actually very entertaining. Good, clean fighting and talented men and women in the ring.

Underway with Femfessionals for Brunch and Blogging with The Writing Whisperer

I always receive invites to attend Femfessional events in NYC and they always conflict with my schedule, so I was more than excited to see that my schedule was open when I received the invite for brunch on a World Yacht cruise from Pier 81 to network and talk about blogging and books. I met so many amazingly talented women and received such a wealth of information from Shannon, The Writing Whisperer, and weather was perfect for a Sunday brunch on the Hudson River!

“A Femfessional is defined as an uber-connected, business-savvy professional woman with a positive outlook and a knack for success. Femfessionals connects ambitious professional women through “Connection Lunches”, originative workshops, social media and www.femfessionals.com, creating individual communities within cities around the world. Their mission is to connect and enable women worldwide to reach their ultimate potential by offering endless resources through the Femfessionals Organization.” It kind of reminds me of a sorority – amazing, talented, goal-oriented, strong women growing and helping build one another in the process, and Femfessionals are in most major cities across the country and in Canada! Are you a Femfessional?

Alicia Key’s in Concert at the Barclay Center

The first time I saw Alicia Keys in concert was in 2008 when she was in New Orleans and I was stunned by her talent. She is so amazing, especially live and 5 years later at the newly opened Barclay Center was no different. If you are a fan I definitely recommend seeing her in concert if you can, she is on fire! (pun intended lol)

Travel Tuesday – What’s Your Soundtrack?

In the car, on the plane, a train ride, or waiting at the airport – wherever I am I like to listen to music and people watch when I’m not chatting up fellow travelers . My travel playlist gets new additions whenever I finally break away from my iPod and listen to the radio and hear new songs that have come out. You’ll always find some oldies in the mix though. I love it all; Classical, Jazz, Pop, Hip Hop, R&B, Alternative, Christian, Gospel, etc…Here’s a list of 20 songs currently on my travel playlist (in no particular order):

  1. Adorn – Miguel
  2. New Day – Alicia Keys
  3. Hello – Karmin
  4. Diamonds – Rihanna
  5. I Cry – Flo Rida
  6. The Point of it All – Anthony Hamilton
  7. Don’t Make Em Like You – Ne-Yo
  8. Locked Out of Heaven – Bruno Mars
  9. I Knew You Were Trouble – Taylor Swift
  10. Next to Me – Emeli Sande
  11. Can’t Hold Us – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
  12. Wonder – Emeli Sande
  13. Higher Than This – Ledisi
  14. Pieces of Me – Ledisi
  15. American Honey – Lady Antebellum
  16. County Line – Sugarland
  17. Chariot – Gavin Degraw
  18. Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing – Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell
  19. Learn to Fly – Foo Fighters
  20. Hey, Soul Sister – Train

Now,  what typically tends to happen (all my friends love this….ok, not so much) is one song on the playlist will instantly become my favorite (it’s the Pisces in me), perhaps depending on my mood or maybe the beat and melody of the song… whatever the reason I will listen to that one song on repeat for hours on end. When I flew to Miami last month, I listened to the same song the entire 2 1/2 hour flight. Same thing happened when I drove to D.C….it was me and Alicia for 4 hours southbound on I95.

Now, when other people travel with me I try to reel it in a bit. I try to a least keep it to a maximum of 5 times in a day (not consecutively) because I understand that everyone does not understand or necessarily enjoy my obsession for listening to songs on repeat…Apparently I’ve ruined a couple of songs for one of my best friends that way…

she seems to be surviving ok though, I’ll update you if things change. What’s the soundtrack to your next travel adventure? Any songs currently on repeat?

Wishing you safe travels! -xo AGT

Tis The Season To Give – Giveaway #3 Spread A Little Holiday Cheer

This is the final giveaway for in the Season To Give postings. I’ve enjoyed reading all of your comments and am thankful for your participation. Today’s giveaway is sponsored by author/singer/songwriter Michael Sheahan and will help to add a little Holiday cheer to your home :)

The winner will receive a brand new copy of his latest Christmas CD and his Children’s Book/CD/DVD The Rooftop Hop! I’ve been listening to the CD for the past week in my car and I LOVE it! ‘Year Out…Year In’ and ‘A Jack Frost Christmas’ are two of my favorites!

During an interview with Michael I learned that he began his career in music and dance as a very young boy, winning worldwide international competitions playing the violin, accordion, tin whistle, flute, and banjo! By the time Michael was nine years old he had performed in front of thousands of people in prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and St. Patrick’s Cathedral, NY. Michael spent several seasons singing professionally with the NY Metropolitan Opera performing in both the Children’s Chorus and as a Soloist and performed in Verdi’s “Aida”, and Wagner’s “Lohengrin”.

His love of celebrating the Holidays with his wife Barbara and three boys inspired him to create the character Mr. Holidays, along with an entire series of characters, songs, books, and dances that cherish the values, warmth, and traditions of each Holiday. The book is award winning, recently winning 2 Moonbeam Awards for Best Holiday Book and Best Book with Music/Theatrical and critically acclaimed. Check out more of my interview with Michael here.

This giveaway is open to residents in the USA only. To enter you must do both and leave a comment here for each:

“Like” A Girl Travels on Facebook and/or tell me your favorite holiday song

Tweet “I just entered the @agirltravels latest #giveaway, you can too!”

The winner will be chosen using random.org and selected on December 11th. Best of luck to you all and Happy Holidays!
