MLK Day of Service
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: “What are you doing for others?”” – MLK Jr
This is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off”. It is a part of United We Serve, the President’s national call to service initiative, and calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems.

Events and happenings in the NYC area
Brooklyn Arts Museum (BAM) will be doing their 26th Annual Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House for free at 10am. There will be one ticket given out per person. First come, first seated basis. BAM will also present a free screening of the film The Black Power Mixtape: 1967-1975 in the BAM Rose Cinemas at 1pm. This film features “never-before-seen interviews with many leaders of the Black Power Movement this moving documentary features a treasure trove of footage shot by Swedish journalists who came to the US drawn by stories of urban unrest and revolution.” –BAM
Celebrate the Dream with JCC Manhattan. From 10am to 2pm participate in the National Day of Service by volunteering. Then come back at 6pm for a free performance that evokes justice, peace, and civil rights at the Peter Nolan Symphony space. Seating is limited, so get there early.
