Soaking Up the Last Days of Summer

The summer months always seem to go by the quickest, but I must admit  I can’t help but smile as the cooler mornings and evening breezes usher in fall. I spent most of my days off exploring places old and … Continue reading

From Manhattan to Brooklyn Continued….

Many tourists flock to the Brooklyn Bridge during their visit to NYC to either walk or bike across the bridge. This past Sunday was an absolutely beautiful in NYC, and a perfect day to take a walk across the bridge. So after brunch, a few beers, and the Giants vs Seahawks game (let’s not talk about that) we took the 6 train down to the Brooklyn Bridge stop. As soon as we excited the subway station we only had to walk across the street to begin our journey from Manhattan to Brooklyn.

Walking the Brooklyn Bridge

The crowd wasn’t too bad in my opinion. I definitely think it could have been a lot worse, and I’m sure that it has been. Everyone was friendly and excited to make the walk across the bridge. There are two paths, one for those who choose to bike across and the other for walking. There were times when people would walk into the bike lane, excited to snap a picture, and those riding bikes would ring their bells or shout to let people know they were coming through. Definitely pay attention if you choose to make the trip across the bridge for your safety, cyclists, and those around you.

When you get to the center of the bridge there are carts selling ice cream, water, juice, and others snacks in case you need to re-hydrate or grab a snack before either continuing on or going back to Manhattan. Views from the center of the bridge are amazing. You can seeing the Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridges, Governors Island, and the Statue of Liberty.

Manhattan Bridge

It seems as though most people choose to relax on benches near the center of the bridge and then make the trip back, because the crowd seemed to thin out as we continued on towards Brooklyn. Once we reached the Brooklyn side we found signs in the sidewalk directing us to other places in Brooklyn and the distance of each location from the Bridge. I have always wanted to go and explore DUMBO and the Brooklyn Bridge Park after hearing so much about it, so we headed in that direction.

The walk from the bridge to the park did not take very long at all, and the road leading to the park is lined with cute shops, bookstores, and places to grab a bite to eat. Where we entered there is a playground and a carousel, and lots of grass and beaches for people to sit and relax. People were in the park playing fetch with their dogs, children played on the playground and road the carousel. A few people were doing a photo shoot, and others just lay on the grass with their laptops or chatted with friends. We found a place to sit, pulled out the iPad to play some games and watched as the sunset.

Sunset on the Brooklyn Bridge

This was a perfect way to end the day and I’m glad I made the trip. I will definitely do it again when friends and family come in town, and I’ve heard about a workout called the Brooklyn Bridge Boot camp that I’m curious to try one day. I hear its pretty intense.

Has anyone else ever walked across the Brooklyn Bridge. What was your experience like? Would you do it again?
