Today my favorite outdoor ice skating rink opens up, Citi Pond in Bryant Park! Perfect timing just as the weather begins to get cooler. So long 80 degree Indian Summers, hello Winter winds and snow! The grand opening celebration will be from 6-7pm with musical performances by Broadway’s Sister Act and Rock of Ages. There will also be ice skating performances and live music from Hillside Elementary School’s Drums of Thunder. After the grand opening celebration the rink will be open to the public from 7pm-12am, and free skate rentals will be given to the first 100 people that arrive, beginning at 5:30pm.
I’ve been following them on twitter as they posted the progress of the rink, Celcius, and the Holiday Shops. My anticipation building for this day, and the weather is forecast to be beautiful! I went last year and had a great time. The line to get in and pick up skates moved quickly, it was easy to check in my bags, and it wasnt too crowded. There is also seating available on the inside and the outside when you need to take a break from skating.
This should definitely be on your list of this to do this winter! The rink will be open until February 26, 2012. Grab your friends and family, bring your skates or rent a pair for $14, and skate to your hearts content :). When you get tired of skating relax inside, sip on hot chocolate, and have a snack at Ice Bites, or grab a bite to eat at the restuarant Celcius and take in the views. Then head over and browse the Holiday Shops. I can’t wait to get out there! Right now I’m just doing the basics around the rink, but my the end of the season I’d like to be able to at least do 3 tricks. How are your ice skating skills? Have you ever been before?
